To upload a SCORM package to TalentLMS, edit the course, click Add, hover over Learning Activities, select SCORM | xAPI | cmi5, then click Upload a SCORM, xAPI, or cmi5 ZIP file and choose your zip. TalentLMS currently supports SCORM 1.2 files only, so a SCORM 2004 export or a Multi-SCO package is not supported.
Your package reports completion to TalentLMS. If your package's score does not show up as the course score, set the course's Score calculation to Units I choose and select the SCORM unit.
The help center lists SCORM and xAPI files at 600MB and zip files at 200MB without saying which applies to a SCORM zip; paid plans have a general limit of 600MB per file. If you deliver the same course to other platforms, which SCORM version does each LMS support covers the export choice.
Which SCORM versions does TalentLMS accept?
SCORM 1.2 and no other SCORM version, as 2 help center articles say.
TalentLMS supports SCORM 1.2 files only and does not currently support SCORM 2004 or Multi-SCO packages.
TalentLMS Help Center, "Why your SCORM content may not complete in TalentLMS"
The overview article names SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 and multiSCO as the most common protocols, then says "Currently, TalentLMS only supports SCORM 1.2".
To check your package before you upload it, open imsmanifest.xml and look for <schemaversion>1.2</schemaversion>, or upload the zip to SCORM Cloud and check the Learning standard.
The SCORM | xAPI | cmi5 unit takes xAPI and cmi5 packages too, and the help center says the AICC standard "is not supported in TalentLMS". TalentLMS cannot create SCORM files directly; you build your package in an authoring tool and upload the zip. If a client asks whether TalentLMS is SCORM compliant, the articles read here state support for SCORM 1.2 and name no conformance test.
If your course exports only SCORM 2004, Rustici's SCORM Cloud support site describes turning a 2004 course into a Dispatch package for a SCORM 1.2 LMS. The TalentLMS articles read for this page do not mention that workaround for SCORM 2004 content.
TalentLMS describes a dispatch file as a small proxy pointing to content on an external server, so loading depends heavily on that server and a broken connection can mean incomplete tracking. The TalentLMS error guide says the "refuses to connect" failure often occurs with dispatch packages. If your authoring tool can publish SCORM 1.2, a full package hosted inside TalentLMS is the setup the error guide recommends.
How do you upload a SCORM package to TalentLMS?
Check 3 things about your zip, then add the SCORM unit in 7 steps inside the course; the steps follow the help center's protocols guide.
Before you upload:
- Zip the contents, not the folder. imsmanifest.xml must sit at the root of your zip, which should open directly to the SCORM files rather than to another folder. All required assets referenced in the manifest must be included in the zip.
- Rename the file. The error guide lists
! @ # $ %, -as special characters that can sometimes cause upload or validation issues, and says to rename the file using only letters and numbers. Sosafety-module-v2.zipbecomessafetymodulev2.zip. - Check the size. Storage is unlimited but each upload is capped. Paid and Premium Trial plans (from January 2015 onwards) have a general limit of 600MB per file, and the list by file type puts SCORM and xAPI at 600MB and zip at 200MB; the Free plan's general limit is 100MB per file. The upload limits article does not say which of those two lines governs a SCORM zip on any plan, or whether the Free plan's 100MB general limit overrides the SCORM line. cmi5 is not on its list.
Then, in the course:
- Sign in as an Administrator or an Instructor, go to Courses, hover over the course and click to edit it.
- Click Add, hover over Learning Activities and select SCORM | xAPI | cmi5.
- Click Upload a SCORM, xAPI, or cmi5 ZIP file and choose the zip from your drive, or select a file the course already holds. You can also drag the zip into the content area.
- When the upload finishes, click the More options button to open the Unit options.
- In Show as, choose Embedded or a pop-up dialog box.
- In Size, set the width and height in pixels.
- Click Save.
The steps article ends at Save. Take the unit yourself as a test user before any learner opens it.
Which unit settings decide completion and score?
The steps article names only Show as, Size and a retry option under Unit options, and none of them is a completion setting. No article read for this page describes a completion setting on the SCORM unit. The help center sends you to your package instead: when the course completes, look for LMSSetValue("cmi.core.lesson_status","completed") or "passed", followed by LMSCommit().
Sometimes your SCORM unit reports its score correctly and the course score does not show it, which the help center says is typically due to the course completion rules, not the SCORM file. The fix sits under Course options, on the Completion tab: find Score calculation, select Calculate score by: Units I choose, then select the SCORM unit. The help center says the score is reflected as the course score once your learners complete the course again.
| Setting | What it does | Pick it when | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show as: Embedded | Shows the package embedded in the unit | The package saves progress as the learner moves, and you want no extra window | Protocols guide |
| Show as: pop-up | Opens the package in a pop-up dialog box | The package sends results only when its window closes; the help center says to set it as a pop-up and close it at the end | Protocols guide; completion article |
| Size | Sets the width and height of the content in pixels | The player is cut off or leaves empty space on the page | Protocols guide |
| When failed retain the failed status upon retries | Keeps a "Not passed" status even if the learner retries to pass | You need failed attempts on the record; the scoring article says it helps keep them from being overwritten | Protocols guide; scoring article |
| Score calculation: Units I choose (Course options, Completion tab) | Uses the units you select for the course score | The SCORM quiz is the score that matters | Scoring article |
| Reset bookmarks | Clears the stored suspend data so updated content loads | You update or replace the package | Error guide |
The Pick it when column is this page's judgment except where a source gives the reason.
TalentLMS counts time from the moment a learner enters a SCORM unit until the unit is completed, and in pop-up mode that includes the Click to Resume screen. If your compliance record shows more minutes than the content takes, check the Show as setting before you blame the package.
Why does a SCORM unit stay incomplete or show an error?
Match the exact message on your screen first. TalentLMS's error guide names 4 failures by their text; the completion and scoring articles cover the silent ones.
| What you see | What it means | Fix | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Uploaded file has unsupported format." or "Access denied" | Usually the zip: the manifest is not at the root, or the file name has special characters | Unzip, open the folder that holds imsmanifest.xml, zip the files inside it, rename with letters and numbers, upload again | Error guide |
| A blank or white screen at launch | Most commonly, stored bookmarks point to locations that changed when the file was updated | Use the Reset bookmarks option; learners in progress restart the unit | Error guide |
| "Invalid cookie parameter" | Browser settings block cookies the course needs, most often in Safari | Try Chrome or Firefox, or turn off Prevent cross-site tracking in Safari and allow cookies | Error guide |
| The course "refuses to connect" | Often a dispatch package whose external server cannot be reached or blocks the connection | Upload the full package; for a dispatch, the host must allow your TalentLMS domain | Error guide |
| The unit stays incomplete | The completion trigger never fired, or the package posts results only when its pop-up closes | Run to the very end with the console open and look for the lesson_status call and LMSCommit(); set pop-up and close it at the end | Completion article |
| No score, and the SCORM report's Analysis tab is empty | Usually, the package is not sending interaction or scoring data | Ask your authoring tool's support to fix the reporting, then upload again | Scoring article |
| The unit reports a score but the course score does not show it | Typically the course completion rules, not the file | Score calculation, Units I choose, select the unit | Scoring article |
If the cookie error keeps coming back, the error guide says TalentLMS support may be able to change your portal's cookie configuration.
What happens to learners when you update a SCORM unit?
Your learners can lose their place or get a blank screen. TalentLMS stores bookmark and suspend data so learners resume where they stopped, and a package with a changed structure may no longer match that data. The overview article lists the results: learners sent to the wrong pages, navigation issues and blank screens at launch.

The error guide strongly recommends enabling the Reset bookmarks option when you update a SCORM package. After a reset, learners in progress start the unit from the beginning, and learners who completed it stay marked completed, though a revisit starts from the beginning too.
The articles read here do not describe the replace itself: they mention updating and uploading again, never the click that swaps a new zip into an existing SCORM unit. As of 9 October 2026, find that control in your own portal on a test course before you plan an update in the middle of a live cohort.
What about the mobile app and exporting?
Does SCORM work in the TalentLMS mobile app?
Yes, for "SCORM (HTML5-based only)", even offline, with progress synced once the device reconnects. The offline list excludes SCORM that runs through an outside server or pulls in content hosted elsewhere, such as YouTube or Vimeo.
SCORM files uploaded before 5 January 2018 have to be uploaded again to work in the app. xAPI and cmi5 sit on the list of content the app does not support at all, in the article's July 2026 wording. If your learners train on phones, the xAPI gap alone can settle the choice between a SCORM 1.2 export and an xAPI one.
Can you export a TalentLMS course as SCORM?
No. TalentLMS's import and export article says "Exporting whole courses created in TalentLMS as standalone packages is not supported". You can download the original files you uploaded, SCORM packages included.
The Export button on the import and export page under Account & Settings produces portal data in CSV or XLSX: users, courses, categories, branches, groups, custom fields and the links between them. None of those files is a course another LMS can load. If you might switch platforms, keep your authoring source file and your SCORM zip outside TalentLMS.
How do you test a SCORM unit in TalentLMS?
You need an Administrator or Instructor login, a free SCORM Cloud trial, a test learner account in your portal, and your browser's developer console.
- Confirm the version. Open imsmanifest.xml and look for schemaversion 1.2.
- Run your package in SCORM Cloud first. TalentLMS recommends SCORM Cloud to see whether completion, score and time are reported, and whether a fault is the package's or the LMS's. Rustici's own help is blunt: "If your content doesn’t work in SCORM Cloud, it is probably not going to work in your LMS either."
- Fix the zip and the file name: manifest at the root, letters and numbers only.
- Upload the unit and set Show as and Size, using the steps above.
- Set Score calculation to Units I choose if the course score should come from the package.
- Take the unit as your test learner with the console open. Trigger all actions toward the end, the Exit button and the last quiz included, and watch for LMSSetValue("cmi.core.lesson_status","completed") or "passed", followed by LMSCommit().
- Read the report. Go to Reports, Learning activities, open the SCORM report and check the Analysis tab, then use View Attempt on the Users tab for time and, where the package supports it, question detail.
- Open the unit in the mobile app if your learners will use it; the app plays HTML5 SCORM and not xAPI or cmi5.
If your own package fails and you cannot tell why, run a known one. The SCORM.com Golf Examples offer a SCORM 1.2 download of the Basic Run-Time Calls example, which bookmarks the learner's place and reports completion and a quiz score.
Sample SCORM packages to test an LMS lists more, and the Moodle upload guide lays out the general test routine, which applies here too. The Canvas guide covers the same zip in another LMS.
Many packages mark completion only on a specific final action, such as an Exit click, and some send results only when the pop-up closes. If your learner never takes that action, the SCORM unit stays incomplete.
| Task | What you need | Rough time |
|---|---|---|
| Version check and SCORM Cloud run (steps 1 and 2) | The zip and a free SCORM Cloud trial | 20 to 30 minutes |
| Zip fix, upload and unit options (steps 3 and 4) | An Administrator or Instructor login | 10 to 15 minutes, plus upload time |
| Score calculation (step 5) | Edit access to the course; the scoring article names no role | 5 minutes |
| Test learner run, report and phone check (steps 6 to 8) | A test learner account and the console | 20 to 40 minutes for a short course |
These are working estimates for one short package, not TalentLMS figures.
Which TalentLMS upload mistakes cost the most?
- Uploading a SCORM 2004 export. TalentLMS supports 1.2 only, so you export and test again.
- Zipping the folder instead of its contents. The manifest has to sit at the root.
- Updating without resetting bookmarks. Learners in progress can hit a blank screen.
- Assuming the SCORM score becomes the course score. The help center says it sometimes does not, and the fix is Score calculation.
- Shipping a dispatch package untested. Loading and tracking depend on a server you do not control.
