Flash to HTML5 conversion for eLearning

Flash to HTML5 conversion is the fix for old Flash courses, which stopped playing when Adobe ended Flash support on 31 December 2020. Some can be re-published as HTML5 from the source file. Others are faster to rebuild. List your courses to see which is which.

How the audit sorts your courses

Each course gets a status from what built it and its format.

If the course is...StatusWhat to do
Flash (.swf) or built in Flash / AnimateWill not playRebuild in HTML5
Old Captivate, Storyline 2 or 3, LectoraCheck itRe-publish as HTML5 from the source file; no source means a rebuild
SCORM 2004, or format unknownCheck itTest it in the new LMS
Video or PDFPlaysTracks nothing: wrap it as SCORM or rebuild it as a lesson
Storyline 360 or Rise, SCORM 1.2Should workTest it once in the new LMS

Rough cost: a rebuild is priced like a new build (60–180 USD per finished minute); a re-publish is about a quarter of that.

How to rescue old eLearning courses

  1. Find the source files

The project file (.story, .cptx and similar) matters more than the published output. With it, a re-publish is often enough.

  2. Sort by risk

Courses people must take by law come first. Then the ones most people take.

  3. Re-publish or rebuild

Re-publish as HTML5 when the source opens in a current tool. Rebuild when it does not, or when the course looks dated anyway.

  4. Test in your LMS

Check that each course launches, completes and scores. See which SCORM version each LMS supports.

Questions about old courses

Can a Flash course be converted automatically?

Not well. Tools can re-publish from the source project, but a .swf file alone usually means a rebuild.

What does it cost to rebuild an old course?

About the same as a new build: 60 to 180 USD per finished minute, depending on how much the learner does. A re-publish costs much less.

We are moving to a new LMS. Will our courses work?

Most SCORM 1.2 courses move fine. SCORM 2004 and very old courses need a test first. Send us a sample and we check it free.
